Are Governmental Regulations Advancing or Retarding Sustainable Development?
What is it and can it be responsible while being profitable?

Protection and advancement of the public’s health, safety and welfare is the foundation of local government development regulations.

But what is the actual outcome, especially with respect to creating sustainable development? Proponents of regulations, including form-based and green codes assert that regulations are essential to promoting best practices and preventing sprawl, environmental damage and socially sterile development. Others claim that regulations too often create barriers to sustainable development by forcing adherence to arbitrary standards and subjective review and approval processes.

The Planning Council’s April 22nd program will further this debate through a lively discussion among three panelists:

Bill Gietema, highly regarded in the industry as an expert in land planning, will discuss the things that make a sustainable development and why they are not allowed in most cities.

Theresa O'Donnell, Director of Sustainable Development and Construction for the City of Dallas, will explain the City's recent moves to enhance the possibility of sustainable
developments and buildings.

Betsy del Monte, Principal and Director of Sustainability for the Beck Group, will provide the design professional's perspective and will act as moderator.

The Greater Dallas Planning Council is conducting its 4th Metromorphosis Symposium on November 4th, 2010. The full-day conference will be at Cityplace in Dallas.
